“Kauanuanu ki ngā Kaumātua”

A kahu showing deep respect, esteem, and reverence for the recognition of greatness and importance as a Rangatira.

The interpretation of “Kauanuanu” is to admire, revere, or think highly of someone and often associated with a sense of awe or inspirational respect. Showing kauanuanu involves acknowledging a leaders role in guiding, mentoring, and maintaining the cultural, spiritual, and physical wellbeing of the whānau and community.

Our Kaumātua are the essential leaders holding wisdom and tribal knowledge. They are regarded as ‘storehouses’ of traditional knowledge and genealogy who are treated with high regard.

Kaumātua lead, offer wisdom, and provide guidance on the marae and in all aspects of life. Often providing support in important matters and on the paepae (formal speaking area).

Together the phrase “Kauanuanu ki ngā Kaumātua” emphasises an acknowledgement of our elders, of valuing their wisdom, their experience, and most importantly their presence.
